How to play it: check the day's official TRM (the rate published by Banco de la República) on dolarhoy.co before you go, so you know what's reasonable. Then eyeball three or four windows at the mall. On smaller amounts (under $500) the spread is only a couple of dollars — the real win is just comparing on the spot. Most operators open 9 AM–7 PM; some open Sundays 11 AM–4 PM.

Getting Around

Uber

Your default. Works fine in this area. Sit in the front seat — it's the local custom and it avoids attention from transit police. Don't use Uber to or from the airport; use an official taxi instead.

No TransMilenio yet

The Carrera 7 line is under construction but not open. Don't plan on it. SITP feeder buses do run on Carrera 7 and Carrera 9 nearby, but Uber is easier for most trips.

Walking

Daytime walking on the main streets is fine. After dark, take an Uber. Keep your phone out of sight on the street — locals call it "no dar papaya," meaning don't make yourself an easy target.

The neighborhood

Santa Bárbara / Usaquén is one of the safer northern Bogotá neighborhoods — upscale, residential, well-patrolled. Quiet on weeknights once offices close, more lively on weekends because of the plaza nearby.
